It's called "social proof". If other girls have found you desirable, they do too. Doesn't just apply to a girlfriend, but being around girls in a social setting. Especially if you're ignoring them instead of chasing them around like a lost puppy.

In the course of this past 2 weeks I expressed mild interest in a woman, someone who a friend was trying to fix me up with and who said she liked me. The girl I've been playing romantic cat and mouse with for the past 8 years broke up with her semi-boyfriend upon hearing this. She texted me every day, We hung out all week, took a hike together, etc... Later in the week I said I thought the other girl was "nice enough, but a bit shy and boring for my taste" The following day cat-and-mouse-girl said she was going to try to get back together with mr. sort-of-boyfriend and doesn't say a word to me for the last 4 days. /me *bangs head against wall repeatedly*

* This is not the first time nearly this exact train of events has played out....

I dunno, I guess having an abundance of girls when you're tied down is ironic, but it's not inconsistent: they could take the time evaluating everyone from scratch, or rely on signals of other girls' evaluations as a shortcut. Like it or not, it's efficient.
